Аннотация
Даётся обзор изменений климата и природной среды Антарктики в кайнозое с более подробной информацией о гляциальной истории Южного континента. Покровное оледенение в Антарктиде началось около 34 млн лет назад. Предполагается, что в последующие 20 млн лет объём ледникового покрова существенно изменялся (от 50 до 130% по сравнению с современным) и только около 14 млн л.н. стал относительно устойчивым. Общие представления об эволюции антарктического оледенения основаны, главным образом, на данных об эвстатических колебаниях уровня Мирового океана и вариациях изотопного состава кислорода в раковинах фораминифер. В последние годы важная информация получена также при геологических и геофизических исследованиях на материке и в окружающих его морях.
